Educational qualifications
  • Ph.D.(Dairying) in Dairy Microbiology from National Dairy Res. Inst., Karnal  in 1990 with Distinction.
  • M.Sc.(Dairying) in Dairy Microbiology from Guj. Agril. Univ. in 1984 with Distinction (Gold Medal).
  • B.Sc.(Dairy Technology), from Gujarat Agril. University in 1980 with First Class.
Areas of Research Interest:
  • Isolation and characterization of lactic acid bacterial for probiotic use.
  • Technology development for incorporation of probiotic bacteria  in milk, cereals, vegetable, fruit based formulations.
  • Study the effects of incorporation of medical herbs/plants in fermented milk based formulations.
  • Study effects of fermentation on nutritional aspects of fermented foods.
  • Evaluation of fermented milk/milk-cereal blended products for therapeutic aspects; viz., antimicrobial, hypocholesterolemic, antitumor, antimutagenic, immunostimulating activities, etc.
Present functions
  • Total 27 years of Teaching and Research Experience.
  • Teaching various courses in Dairy Microbiology and Food Biotechnology at Under Graduate and Post Graduate Levels.
  • Exploiting the therapeutic potential of lactobacilli is my major field of research work.
  • Principal investigator for 3 research projects related to fermented foods and indigenous products.
  • Supervising 2 PhD and 6 M. Tech. students.
  • Administration of the Department and working in several committees.

Achievements
  • Published more than 160 papers, including research papers, brief communications, review & technical articles, chapters in books and 2 books.
  • Recipient of I.C.A.R. Scholarship B.Sc.(DT)  and ICAR Sr. Fellowship during Ph.D. studies.
  • Awarded "Chancellor's Gold Medal" for being the best post graduate student during the year 1984-85 by Gujarat Agricultural University.
  • Awarded "Hari Ohm Ashram Prerit Bhaikaka Inter Univ. Smarak Trust" Prize for the year 1987 as well as again in 2001 for the best papers in the subject of dairy science.
  • Indian National Science Academy's Visiting Fellow- 93-94 for work on Genetic Improvement of Probiotic Lactobacilli.
  • A co-worker in the work on Biotechnological applications of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria for which Hari Ohm Ashram Sponsored Prof. J. P. Trivedi award 1993-94 is given to Dr. J. M. Dave.
  • Course coordinator for short term training course on "Dairy Starter Cultures" as well as "Quality Assurance in Dairy Industry".
  • Organizing secretary for several national and international seminars and workshops organized at the faculty of Dairy Science.
  • Editor "DSCA News Link", a half-yearly news letter published by Alumni Association, SMC College of Dairy Science, AAU, Anand from 1997 to 2004.
Others:
  • Coordinator, Swedish South Asian Network on Fermented Foods which is an international network of academicians and professionals interested in promoting fermented foods for health status and social well-being.
  • Member in Indian National Committee of International Dairy Federation  (IDF) in 3 groups viz., Probiotics, Lactic acid bacteria & starters and Microbiological methods for analysis
  • Visited Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Finalnd for building network on fermented foods and working on collaborative research projects.
  • Member of ZEC (WZ) and SEC (Gujarat) of Indian Dairy Association.
  • Life member of several professional bodies like, AFSTI, IDA, AMI, ISCA, GAAS, Biosensor Society of India, etc.

Observations on compositional, nutritional, implantational and survival aspects of Lactobacillus acidophilus (LB1H3) spray dried in blended carrier media

  5. Effects of Medicinal Herbs on Lactic Acid Bacteria and their use in preparation of Probiotic Lassi.
